This film is true classic - One of the best films ever made BAR-NONE. There are the obvious reasons for liking this film - firstly the plot is wonderful - how one thing leads on to another.
Al Pacino and Marlon Brando were electrifying as Vito and Michael but in my opinion the star of the show was James Caan as Sonny - he is probably the most memorably brilliant character ever, also turning excellent performances were the superb but terribly underrated John Cazale as Fredo - The disregarded brother (he would shine trough in part 2) and Robert Duvall as Tom Hagen.
The most memorable scene in my mind if where Sonny gives his brother in law Carlo a slight beating with a dustbin lid.;
A true classic and JUST better than the sequel.

Pacino has only 2 lines of (English) dialog in this scene but accomplishes more as an actor here than any of the loud scenery chewing he's done in the last 2 decades. The opening scene at the wedding, family, Mike moving his father in the hospital because he knows he is in danger and rules be damned he moved him, my favorite scene, an aging Don Vito schooling Mike on how they would try to come at him, when he died, and the reaction of Vito, when he learns that Mike is the one who shot Sallozzo and McCluskey.  Family that is the theme that runs through all three of these classics, and yes I am calling #3 a classic because it is connected to the first two, even Mike on the steps of that Opera house screaming that his little girl has been taken away, sort of like divine Justice, The Godfather truly an American masterpiece. One last point, it was a stroke of genius that Coppala cast Brando as Don Corleone, who else in the world could have brung that character to life as Brando did, amazing.

I think that's one thing Hollywood and filmmakers in general are guilty of - they're helping build a cult of personality for people who really don't deserve it.
